What is Lean

Lean is a process designed to bring about rapid, dramatic improvements to the performance of an organization through a simplification of the value stream.  It consists of a comprehensive set of elements, rules and tools that focus on value, the elimination of waste and continuous incremental improvement.  Results achieved include excellent quality products or services, delivered on time, at the lowest total cost, and only on the specific demand of the customer.  When applied to business processes or service environments, lean thinking reduces cycle times and streamlines processes by removing non-value-added steps.

What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a business-driven, multi-faceted approach to process improvement that reduces costs and increases profits.  With a fundamental principle to improve customer satisfaction by reducing defects, its ultimate performance target is virtually defect-free processes and products.  The steps of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC), constitute the roadmap to achieving this goal.  Six Sigma’s flexibility easily integrates with existing models of process implementation.

Why Lean Six Sigma?

Many companies pursue either Lean or Six Sigma as a means to meet the challenge of demanding customers to whom businesses must consistently deliver products and services that are of greater value.  However, using one approach independent of the other has limitations.  When used together, these methods complement and reinforce each other.  Both methodologies continually applied in tandem create sustained realized improvements.

Speed, quality and cost are the components that drive the success of any organization.  Lean Six Sigma (LSS) works on all three simultaneously because it blends Lean, with its primary focus on process speed, and Six Sigma, with its primary focus on process and product quality, within a proven organizational framework for superior execution.  This program specifically addresses how integrating Lean (making work faster) and Six Sigma (making work better) helps an organization move quickly with higher quality and lower cost.

Why THIS Lean Six Sigma Program?

It’s important for a LeanSix Sigma program to be well-rounded. This means a course that offers a balanced curriculum in both Lean andSix Sigma.  Our course provides a solidfoundation for all belt candidates that can be applied towards a variety ofbusiness improvements.  Whether acandidate is working for a company looking to incorporate more Lean Six Sigmathinking or an unemployed individual looking to build up their skill set, thiscourse offers something for everyone. Not only is the course taught by a well-skilled, master black belt, butthere are also a variety of invaluable course materials provided at noadditional costs.  An online test bankhosting over 1000 questions allows candidates to test their knowledge of thematerial.  In addition, 250 Excelspreadsheets are provided to guide students through the process of theirprojects.

Benefit for Company Sponsors

Whether you are sending your employees for training or providing a project for an external candidate, our Lean Six Sigma course will provide your company with innumerable benefits.  As of March 2010, Monroe Community College has worked with 57 companies, implementing various projects, and saving over 20 million dollars. Green Belt and Black Belt candidates are required to work on projects aimed at saving their companies $25k and $100 k respectively.  All candidates will be apt to provide Lean Six Sigma thinking in all aspects of their business involvements.

Benefit for Individual Candidates

Program Options

There are four different program options associated with the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification.  The White Belt, Yellow Belt, Green Belt, and Black Belt options offer varied levels of training, which differ in the length, depth, and breadth of the material covered.

If you already have a White, Yellow, or Green Belt and are interested in pursuing a higher-level certification, please contact Chuck Caples (contact info below) for more information on how to enroll in a higher-level certification program.

White Belt Certification

The White Belt Certification is a 20-hour introductory course, over 3 consecutive days for the day program or 3 weeks (two evenings per week) for the evening program, that covers the basics of LSS philosophy and concepts.  This course is ideal for anyone interested in an exposure to Lean Six Sigma concepts and principles.  Participants will learn the tools that will help them become effective contributors on process improvement teams.  Participants will be introduced to the DMAIC methodology – Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control – and receive training in methods and tools used to enhance basic process and product quality.  It will also allow employees to introduce LSS into more areas within the organization and reach operational level employees.

Yellow Belt Certification
The Yellow Belt Certification is a 35-hour course, over 5 consecutive days (for day program) or 2 nights per week over 5 weeks (for evening program).  The Yellow Belt training provides insight into the techniques of LSS, its metrics, and basic improvement methodologies as well as how to apply these on a day-to-day basis to ongoing operations.  This course is ideal for those who seek knowledge of Lean Six Sigma concepts and principles and who wish to begin to apply it to their daily business activities.  Upon completion, Yellow Belt candidates are knowledgeable in Lean Six Sigma, but do not lead projects on their own.

With this level of certification, individuals are able to gather data, participate in problem-solving exercises and add their personal experiences to the exploration process.  Certified Yellow Belts will also gain the skills to identify, monitor, and control non-value added practices in their own processes as well as provide this information to Green and Black Belts who may be working on larger projects.  In addition, they will have the ability to recognize process improvement opportunities for escalation to Green or Black Belts.

Green Belt Certification
The Green Belt Certification is a 70-hour course, over two non-consecutive weeks separated by three weeks for ‘real world’ application (for the day program) or 2 nights per week over 10 consecutive weeks (for the evening program).  This course is ideal for anyone who will be participating in a LSS process improvement project or would like to learn the principles involved to further their professional skills.  It will teach you how to implement the features of both Lean and Six Sigma to help secure the long-term competitive advantage of your company or organization.  The information contained in this program is applicable to practically any environment.

Green Belt trainees will apply LSS tools to reduce sources of defects, increase the speed of the process by eliminating waste and verify the effectiveness of their solutions.  Instructors use interactive simulations, small group interaction, and hands-on exercises throughout the program.  Candidates will work through a real improvement project to attain a deeper level of learning and immediate payback for their organization.

Certified Green Belts are able to support Black Belts on their projects by collecting and conducting simple data analysis, and in the preparation of reports.  They may also lead small, focused projects within their departments.

Black Belt Certification
The Black Belt Certification is a 140-hour course, over four non-consecutive weeks, with three weeks of ‘real world’ application following each week of instruction (for the day program) or 2 evenings per week for 20 consecutive weeks (for the evening program).  This course is beneficial to anyone wishing to master LSS principles and lead LSS process improvement projects.  LSS Black Belt candidates are change agents and leaders who have developed a high proficiency in Lean and Six Sigma philosophies, concepts and tools, and understand how these two powerful methodologies augment each other.

This particular program engages a project-based approach to deliver and reinforce Black Belt skills.  During the training period, candidates work through a real improvement project while being coached.  This results in a deeper level of understanding and immediate payback for the organization.  Hence, becoming a Black Belt is an outstanding investment in your personal and professional development.  The training for Black Belts provides higher-level tools and methodologies required to function in their role as project managers.
